Born in Como on July 1, 1937.
Married, two daughters.
Degree in Economics at the Catholic
University of Milan
High school teacher by profession,
he joined the union in 1964.
In the mid-sixties and till 1972
he worked in the ACLI (Italian Workers' Christian Associations),
and was elected their National President in 1969.
He became a CISL full-time officer
in 1974, and at the 1977 Congress he was elected as member
of the CISL General Council.
A member of the ICFTU Executive Committee
since 1977, he was CISL delegate for TUAC for many years
and a member of the Italian workers' delegation at the ILO
Conference.
Elected to the CISL National Secretariat
in 1983, he was first in charge of Regional and Environmental
affairs, and then, Secretary for Organization.
Member of the ETUC Executive Committee
since the 3rd Congress (Munich 1979) he has always been
involved in European affairs, also as a member of the European
Movement.
Elected ETUC General Secretary in
May 1991, and reelected in May 1995 and in July 1999.
