working group
nationalism
in an enlarged EU: solving ethnic conflicts at local community
level
Following a brief introduction by
Peter Emerson, of the Northern Ireland Green Party and the
deBorda Institute, the format of this workshop is discussion
of ethnic and nationalist conflict at local community level
with attention to common factors amongst specific conflicts.
Congress participants who have first-hand knowledge, from
either experiential or academic perspective are encouraged
to share their experiences.
Discussion of past and current solutions
and their results, as well as innovative or untried approaches
will focus on conflict resolution at local community level.
This approach emphasizes the Green philosophy of action
at lowest effective level. The long-term goal is developing
practical information, approaches and tools that will facilitate
intergroup or ethnic conflict minimization and provide a
basis for action by local and multinational industry, NGOs,
community and neighbourhood groups.
The report of this workshop will
influence the preparation for a conference to be held in
Belfast, Northern Ireland in Spring 2003. It is envisaged
that networks of the EFGP would emulate or become involved
with the Green Islands Network project, which has generated
this workshop.
