working group Understanding Green Politics
- an Integral Spiral Dynamics perspective on strategy and
communication
introduction
Spiral Dynamics is a tool for understanding
the ways people think, and how groups and societies gravitate
around certain value systems. What it does is enable you
to understand how open or not people are likely to be to
your message (and message bearer), and why certain issues
and people seem to resonate with them, and certain not.
It was used to great effect with Nelson Mandela, De Klerk
and Buthelezi to help the peaceful transition in South Africa,
who all acknowledge its impact. Blair, Bush, Clinton have
all requested briefings, as well as the UN.
Some key elements for the Greens are why voters react in
certain ways to Green politics, and how we can understand
the sometimes turbulent dynamics inside the Green Parties
themselves (and wider movement). It is not about typologies,
but about the way people see things in certain situations.
In this interactive workshop, we will explore what value
systems dominate the Green political scene, and how they
interact with voters and other political parties.
